2012 Post Event Report

Bronte SLSC - Thursday, December 06, 2012

To all those who entered and swam the 12th annual Banana Boat Bondi to Bronte on Sunday 2nd December, we at Bronte Surf Life Saving Club would like to say a huge thank you for your support of our pinnacle event. We hope you enjoyed the day and had a truly memorable experience.

The week prior got us all excited with incredibly warm and calm ocean conditions. However the Banana Boat Bondi to Bronte would not be the iconic swim it has grown to be without the challenging conditions we have come to expect on the 1st Sunday of December each year.

With over 1650 entered, 1336 swimmers braved the conditions. It was clear standing on blustery Bondi Beach that some had not quite forgotten the incredibly challenging conditions of 2011. However the winds were weaker and the swell was much smaller than 2011... thankfully!

A huge congratulations to Jarrod Port for continuing his ocean swimming dominance taking out both the 2012 Banana Boat Bondi to Bronte and the Dash for Cash, as did our female elite winner Zoe Elkerton. The elite women put on an incredible dash for the line with Zoe just pipping Jessica Ashwood to claim 1st for the main event. The top 10% of the field swam a highly respectable 38mins for the 2.2km course.

We could not have put this event on without the help of our neighbouring SLSC Clubs; Bondi, Tamarama, North Bondi, Clovelly and Coogee as well as the Waverly Council Lifeguards whom were a part of our incredible 85+ strong water safety contingent. Our priority is to ensure all swimmers have a safe and enjoyable journey, thanks to all swimmers whom have contacted us with their messages of appreciation and recognition of the water safety and event volunteers whom made their day special.

A few more special thanks must go out to our event major sponsor Banana Boat - this is the 10th year they have supported the event and this year they kindly gave away a full size tube of their brand new 50+ Sport sun cream to get everyone ready for summer.

To our supporting partners, Speedo for once again supplying fantastic prizes and a cap for every swimmer, Gatorade for supplying endless amounts of Gatorade to all thirsty swimmers, the team for Chobani giving away over 2500 pots of all natural yoghurt and of course Kellogg's for the Be Natural bars that helped all water safety and swimmers refuel after the swim.

A big thank you comes from the team at The Kids Cancer Project, our event and the fundraising swimmers have managed to raise a total of $26,490 to date. You still have two weeks left before fundraising for the Banana Boat Bondi to Bronte closes - so make sure you chase up those people who can possibly help you make your swim incredible.

Event results are now on the website and Marathon Photo’s were with us on the day – aiming to snap a shot of every swimmer crossing the line. Go to the event photo gallery now available to view on our website to find your finishing photo.

So once again, thank you for your support and we would love to hear your thoughts on how we can make The Bondi to Bronte even better in 2013. There will be a short questionnaire being sent out in the New Year and will be available on the website from January also or you can always email us.

We hope that the rest of your summer ocean swimming season is successful and we look forward to seeing you back on the 1st December 2013.
