Let's find kinder, more effective treatments for kids with cancer
Andrew Le Verde can recall the details of his daughter Angelia’s ordeal with B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia on a whim, but there’s one part he’d like to forget.
Some initial health complications led to Angelia getting some tests. Within three days she was diagnosed with leukaemia
“I remember when they told us. My wife and I were in the emergency department – we just looked at each other and felt our world change in an instant,” Andrew recalls.
"That first six weeks of treatment is something I don’t really want to remember. She changed within herself,”
After ringing the bell to signify the end of her treatment in late 2024, Angelia is now a happy, caring and outgoing five-year-old – a bit cheeky, but she’s certainly a loveable little one that’s come a long way.
Angelia’s ordeal has Andrew convinced that the need to find better treatments for paediatric cancer is at a critical point. It's where your Bondi to Bronte swim this year comes in.
“The treatment is intense. Kids shouldn’t have to go through that amount of medication and poison being put into their bodies. If there’s something out there that’s less strenuous on them, I’m all for it. Any support helps because these kids don’t deserve this life at all.”
Since The Kids’ Cancer Project was founded in 1993, the survival rate for kids’ cancers has risen from 58% to 86%. That’s no accident. That statistic is only true because amazing people like you have kindly donated and raised funds to support lifesaving research. Each percentage isn’t just a number, it represents thousands of children
Every time the survival rate goes up thanks to new research, it means more children can grow up, free from cancer and the fear of dying − as all kids should. It means families can raise their children rather than lose them to a cruel disease.
But we can’t take our foot off the gas. Three kids still die from cancer in Australia every week, and the only way to change that is to continue funding research now.
We need you to help raise more lifesaving funds to support kids’ cancer research. Please set up your fundraising page by clicking here.
